Different toys and games are best suited to different age groups. Here is a quick guide to selecting toys by age.

Toys for infants should help develop their senses. Contrasting colors help develop vision. Blocks help build motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Toys that make noise help babies learn to locate sounds. Rattles and squeaky are excellent for babies; so are pots and pans they can bang together.

Toddlers are more active and should have toys that will keep them busy. Toys with lots of knobs, buttons, and pockets are excellent for this age range. Toddlers are also developing their fine motor skills: building bricks, sorting toys, and crayons help with this. They also like to imitate adults, so playhouses are a hit.

By preschool, kids are starting to learn their ABCs, numbers, and language skills. Alphabet and number puzzles can expose them to these concepts. Board games and card games help them develop their social skills. This is also and age when physical activity should be encouraged: balls, jump ropes, sand boxes, and mini basketball hoops foster exercising.

In grade school, toys and puzzles that encourage learning are a good idea. Word puzzles, simple logic games, and trivia games all fall in this category. Getting kids outdoors is important at this age to establish good habits and compete with video games. Bikes, outdoor toys, and sports equipment are good for grade-schoolers. Clever catch balls combine physical and mental activity.
