Staying hydrated is extremely important for human health. Most of our body is water and the supply needs to be replenished frequently. Fluids are essential for removing waste, controlling temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, and maintaining a healthy metabolism. Symptoms of dehydration include fatigue, headache, confusion, and dry mouth.

Adults should, on average, drink 8 glasses of water each day. You should drink more if you are exercising. When exercising longer than an hour, sports drinks hydrate better than just water. Most healthy people can stay hydrated by drinking water or other fluids when they feel thirsty, but people may not feel as thirsty as they get older. You should drink enough water to use the bathroom every two to four hours.

Water is not the only option for staying hydrated. Most beverages (except alcohol) contribute to healthy hydration. Coffee hydrates almost as well as water, but excess caffeine should be avoided. Some foods such as soup, fruits, and vegetables also contributed needed fluids.
